Mantis Mobilis in mobili
35 years of video. One engine.
From Cinepak in 1991 to Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.
Mantis is our own engine, written from scratch in Swift — our demuxer, our pipeline, decoded on Apple silicon.
Named after the mantis shrimp: sixteen kinds of photoreceptors where we have three, and one of the fastest strikes in nature.

Video on a CD-ROM
Cinepak arrived with QuickTime and put video on an ordinary computer for the first time — a small window playing from a CD-ROM. Games, encyclopedias and the first trailers of the nineties ran on it.
Mantis todayMantis still plays it — old AVIs from those discs open without a converter.
The DVD era
MPEG-2, menus, several audio tracks and subtitles on one disc. The picture is interlaced, like broadcast TV — on a computer screen it tears into combs.
Mantis todayMantis reads VOBs with their languages and subtitles from the IFO, and removes the combing with deinterlacing.
Films from the internet
DivX ;-) squeezed a film onto a single CD, and movies spread across the internet as AVIs. Xvid followed — and for years it was the language of home collections.
Mantis todayDivX 3, Xvid and DivX 5 in AVI, MKV or MP4 — Mantis plays them all.
High definition
H.264 delivered the same picture at half the bitrate and became the common language of video: YouTube, iTunes, Blu-ray, the camera in every phone.
Mantis todayMantis hands H.264 and HEVC to Apple's hardware decoders — cool and quiet.
Blu-ray and lossless sound
Full HD on a disc, VC-1 and H.264 — and for the first time at home, lossless sound: Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio.
Mantis todayMantis reads M2TS, plays VC-1 and delivers TrueHD and DTS-HD MA with every channel.
4K
HEVC halved the bitrate again and made 4K and 10-bit ordinary — for streaming, cameras and UHD Blu-ray.
Mantis todayMantis plays 4K 10-bit HEVC on Apple's hardware, with HDR10 and HLG.
HDR and Atmos
Dolby Vision added dynamic HDR metadata to every frame, Dolby Atmos put sound objects overhead. That is how big films are mastered today.
Mantis todayDolby Vision 5 and 8, profile 7 from UHD Blu-ray converted to 8.1 on the fly; Atmos in Dolby Digital Plus plays as Atmos.
The open codec
AV1 is the royalty-free codec of the AOMedia alliance — Google, Netflix, Amazon and Apple among its members. YouTube and Netflix already stream it.
Mantis todayOn M3, A17 Pro and newer Mantis hands AV1 to the hardware; elsewhere it decodes in software, up to 4K.
Dolby Vision in your pocket
iPhone 12 became the first phone to shoot Dolby Vision — cinema HDR came to home video.
Mantis todayMantis hands iPhone Dolby Vision to the system decoder — exactly as it was shot.
Subtitles from speech
Apple gave its devices their own speech recognition models — no server, no network. Any film can now get subtitles.
Mantis todayMantis feeds the audio to on-device recognition: an episode gets subtitles in about half a minute.
All of it. One engine.
Thirty-five years of formats in one engine, written from scratch in Swift — on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV.
Mantis todayNothing plays like Tilus.

Subtitles
Subtitles that weren't there.
Tilus writes them from speech, right on your device, with Apple's latest models — and translates any track into your language.
From speech
